AKM Semiconductor, AverLogic Technologies and Intellon Launch “Streaming iPod and Audio-over-Powerline” Reference Design
(Taipei, Dec. 12th,
2008) AKM Semiconductor, Inc., the world’s premier supplier of
digital audio converter IC’s, AverLogic Technologies, Corp. (TOSE：6198),
the video processing IC and specialty memory design company, and
Intellon Corp. (Nasdaq: ITLN), a leading provider of HomePlug-based
powerline ICs, announce the launch of “Streaming iPod®
and 192KHz Audio-over-Powerline” reference design. The innovative
digital home audio streaming reference design uses existing power
line infrastructure to stream the live audio to anyplace within the
The audio transmitter is capable of streaming high
quality stereo audio via home powerlines to one or multiple audio
stations placed at any desired location – creating a whole-house
audio distribution system without the need to install any new
The new Audio
reference design incorporates cutting-edge audio processors and
powerline communication technologies to allow CD-quality digital
audio data to transport over the power line. Both of the reference
designs -- Streaming iPod®
and 192KHz Audio-on-Powerline – can
be easily adapted to varieties of audio system applications
that send and receive audio
content from any source anywhere in a home. The performance of this
solution provides top-grade sound quality delivery as if it is
delivered via top-end audio cable. A configurable latency time can
be as low as 10ms, meeting the high-end stereo system criterions and
an audiophile’s expectations. An iPod docking connecter is also
incorporated on board with full function control supported,
including the remote control IR feedback from the receiving unit.
design includes a
transmitter (TX unit) and a receiver
(RX unit). The TX unit consists
of an audio input module to accept stereo CVBS, line-in, SPDIF,
optical, or iPod audio input and a powerline communications (PLC)
network module to stream audio over the existing electrical wiring.
The RX unit also consists of the PLC network module and audio output
module to receive audio stream for CVBS, phone jack, SPDIF and
optical output. The core chips supplied by AMK are high-quality
Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs) and Digital-to-Analog Converters
(DACs) along with a digital audio processor. AverLogic supplies a
multimedia network controller. Intellon Corporation provides the
HomePlug 1.0 with Turbo powerline controllers. This combination of
technologies comprises a complete solution in a reference design
that will shorten time-to-market companies looking to market
products over a wide range of audio streaming applications,
including whole-home audio distribution systems of CD, MP3, iPod or
DAB (Digital Audio Broadcast) content sources to the home’s remote
speakers. The reference design guarantees a stable audio streaming
by using the proprietary Dynamic Bandwidth Management (DBM)
technology to ensure a smooth streaming quality, even over the noisy
power line environment.
